Duncan started writing after he had begun his career as a software developer in Nottingham, making serial fiction for his co-workers. He took a break from narrative fiction after moving to Surrey, but continued to invent fictional elements in roleplaying and collaborative games. He also started writing on his first blog, "Why Should I Listen To You?".
He signed up for his first National Novel Writing Month in 2004, and blew through the 50,000 words in about three weeks. He has been drafting material under the NaNoWriMo banner ever since.
