There are certain important landmarks around London whose location any
aspirant should be aware of: the pubs Pilgrims meet in.
Directions follow, but Mr Wild Pants has drawn a useful map of the area around
Euston which may be of help.
The Head of Steam
Often known as THOS (no relation to the Pilgrim and Doctor Who
impersonator), this is the primary meeting place of the Pilgrims, since it has
good beer and is handy for Euston station. It is also a haven for bus spotters,
since the gallery overlooks Euston bus station. Unfortunately, such perfection
comes at a price: it very rarely opens at noon.
Directions
Coming out of Euston station through the double doors at the front, you will
see a raised grass area come sculpture park come open air drinking den. Head
down the path to the left of this multi-purpose open space, and you will find
doors to the Head of Steam on the next corner.
The Euston Flyer
The usual backup plan when THOS is closed is to meet up for a warming ale in
The Euston Flyer instead, just a short walk down Euston Road.
Directions
From Euston station as before, then turn the corner at the (presumably
closed) Head of Steam. Cross over the bus station and walk alongside the park
area until you reach the Euston Road. Cross the road and turn left, then walk
along the Euston Road for a certain distance (half a mile at most).
The Cobden Arms
Sadly, not all pubs are happy places. Following an incident during
Pilgrimage #6, Pilgrims have been avoiding this venue. Directions are included
more as a warning than anything else.
Directions
Coming out of Mornington Crescent station, turn right. Keep walking for a
quarter of a mile or so; the Cobden Arms will be visible on your right. Don't
go in.
The Hog's Head
Another inn serving very fine ales. It is actually closer to Camden Town
tube than Mornington Crescent, but has become the usual post-homage place of
recuperation.
Directions
Er... well, I'm actually usually following someone else at this point. I
can't offer good directions. I know you walk towards Camden Town tube on the
main road, then you turn left, and the pub is on the left a wee way up the
street, but that's about all I can remember.
Precision? I've heard of it.
If other Pilgrims can offer more complete guidance, I would be happy to
reproduce it here
Other Places
Any other places which fellow Pilgrims would like to see directions to? One
that springs to mind is The White Horse in Parson's Green, or The London
Transport Museum. Any others? Let me know.
