"In another large journal book, he wrote his notes out again, along with further notes on the notes, and then started to cross words out of the completed, annotated notes, carefully removing word after word until he had something that looked like a poem. This was how he imagined poetry to be made."

Iain M. Banks, Use of Weapons

This section is dedicated to those stories that I have written over the years which are in a state to be displayed publically. For a variety of reasons, there isn't a lot here...

Why I Write
I enjoy writing. My education did not include much training in writing, since formal teaching in the humanities stopped for me at 16 (at that time education after that age in the UK, or England at least, became quite specialised): I have a mediocre O level in English Language, a failed O level in English Literature, and that's about it as far as writing qualifications go.

I do read a lot, though. Since the age of seven I've read practically anything that wasn't nailed down, and I was very lucky in that my parents owned a huge number of books. I was particularly fond of science fiction novels, and used to haunt the SF section of the library selecting the three precious books that I would take home to read that week. My theory about why I started writing, or at least about why I started to have ideas about it, was that the ideas in my head that I'd been stuffing in there for all those years simply reached critical mass and started to spark off new ideas which I could scribble down on paper for others to read. And so it began.

What I Write
The fact of the matter these days is that I spend almost all of my writing energy on novels and my writing blog. Shorter fiction doesn't happen (and tends to expand to novella length if it does) so it seems unlikely that these pieces will be added to.

The fiction here is not recent, but it is self-contained. Without pleading for indulgence, these capsules are generally in need of a rewrite. In my defence, I have chosen to publish these here as they stand as an open and honest portrayal of how they were first read by others. There are notes on each piece, including an approximate date for when it was written.
